You cannot slip on sun

Wed, 06/26/2024 - 8:45pm

I don’t think I know anyone who likes sweltering heat, although I know some thunderstorm fans. I am not one. And Monday’s end of day, very windswept rain was wild and surprising, as was Sunday night’s impressive thunderstorm. Just because I don’t like them, doesn’t mean I don’t respect them, and can’t find some awe in them, when they are truly awesome.

Weather is not ours to decide, except by the decisions the world, meaning all of us, has or have already made that amped up climate change, and whatever decisions we can make now to make it take longer.

If you do not believe in climate change, I wish I lived in your world.

Two thoughts on all the above: First, when you are out on the pavement or elsewhere ruing the sun, be glad, as I am, not to be in a January wind chill of - 20F. And unlike winter’s ice and winter’s and spring’s mud, you cannot slip on sun. Just stay cool and hydrated.

And second, when at St. Philip’s Strawberry Festival this Saturday, or this summer’s Wiscasset Schoonerfest, Summerfest at First Congregational Church in Wiscasset, Wiscasset Art Walk, Dresden’s Summerfest and more – including Wiscasset’s Fourth of July parade next week, if you can believe it is that close, because I cannot – please take your trash with you and, when next you buy whatever that trash used to be, buy recyclable or reusable as much as possible. Maybe we’re not stopping climate change, but it is better for the environment and everyone in it.

Week’s positive parting thought: The days are now getting ever so shorter, so let’s make the most of all these amazing hours of daylight for the months we have them.
