Young Wiscasset musicians entertain
March is national “Music In Our Schools” month, and to celebrate, the Wiscasset Schools performance ensembles gave a concert for students and staff at Wiscasset Elementary School March 29.
The concert opened with the elementary school chorus performing “Feel the Beat,” by John Jacobson, “Let Us Sing Together” (a traditional round) and “Drag Me Down,” popularized by the group One Direction.
Next, the WMHS Band treated the audience to several short pieces to show off the band’s musical skills. Some favorites were, “Theme from ‘William Tell,’” “Old McDonald Had a Band,” “Ode to Joy” and “Hard Rock Blues.”
The WMHS Chorus performed the South African hymn, ”Siyahamba,” Irving Berlin’s “Play For Me a Simple Melody” and the swinging “Doctor Jazz” by Walter Melrose and Joseph "King" Oliver, which featured solos by Harper Atwood and Christopher Lincoln.
As a finale, all choral students joined in the Japanese folk song, “Hitori.” Elementary students accompanied the song on xylophones and glockenspiels.
Music teachers Carole Drury and Beth Goodliff are very proud of all of our Wiscasset musicians for their successful performance! These ensembles will also give a spring concert for the community on Thursday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the WMHS gym. Hope to see you there!
