Living the Hilton Head life
Enough is enough. I broke down this week. I got a haircut. Haircutter Ann Ross did a fine job juggling masks, disinfecting spray, germ-killing wipes, and scissors
Summer arrived this week, along with Memorial Day. And tourists. Unlike in Maine where a 14-day self quarantine order has crimped vacationers, Hilton Head beaches were very crowded for the start of summer. And beachgoers left behind 1,600 bags of trash.
Many Hilton Head residents have the same concerns some Mainers have, that visitors will unintentionally bring the Coronavirus with them. Evidence of that tension is at the supermarkets, where it seems locals are masked up but the visitors - thinking they’re on vacation and, therefore, perhaps immune to illness ... are not. Unfortunately, making a trip to the store seems to have become a political statement.
Meanwhile, the air conditioner/heat pumps have been running for a few days straight. While they keep us cool, it’s not the cool we enjoy with the windows open in Maine. Visitors and home owners’ guests are out and about in the neighborhood, as we are. Dog Walk Rush Hour is 5pm.
Donna had a birthday this week, one she aggressively campaigned for me to remember and appropriately gift. She has this idea that, last year, I forgot her birthday. Simple truth is that I failed to get her a card. In her book, that means I forgot.
Usually, to celebrate a birthday, we’ll go out to dinner. Not so simple to do these days, so we did Take Out from a local restaurant, Fiesta Fresh - Mexican. Many of our neighbors have been doing Take Out often, but for us this was the first time - in eight weeks - not bad! Dinner was very tasty. We’re looking forward to another neighborhood Dinner in the Driveway next week.
