Mindfulness author Janet Ettele brings Buddhist wisdom to Boothbay Harbor
On Wednesday, July 25 at 5 p.m., author, life coach, and musician Janet Ettele will present “Inner Peace as a Way of Life” at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. This event, which combines aspects of a traditional book talk with an interactive discussion of methods for cultivating inner peace, offers a path through the turmoil of our contemporary world.
As an author, Ettele aspires to bring Buddhist philosophy to life through the art of fiction. The books in her How Life Works series, published by Karuna Publications, are based on the profound teachings of Master Shantideva, a renowned eighth century Buddhist monk. How Life Works conveys the wisdom of Master Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, colloquially known as The Six Perfections, through the lens of a modern parable.
“I do think the value of any spiritual teaching lies in its ability to be applied during daily life,” Ettele says. “Most people I interact with feel the effects of today’s tumultuous world pretty intensely. These characters and books, which are very relatable, offer a glimpse as to how we can harness the transformative power of The Six Perfections to bring about positive, powerful changes in our own lives, and, in turn, the lives of others.”
Although Ettele’s writing is rooted in Buddhist teachings, she presents their insights in a practical manner relevant to audiences of all religious and spiritual backgrounds. During “Inner Peace as a Way of Life,” Ettele will share her own story, detailing her journey as a student of Buddhism and explaining how she came to write books based on Master Shantideva’s teachings. Most importantly, she will discuss the everyday utility of Buddhist principles including interdependence, impermanence, karma, compassion and equanimity, demonstrating how they fit into daily life. By imbuing everyday activities with mindfulness, we can foster a more compassionate and peaceful way of living at home and beyond.
Ettele graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston and worked in the entertainment industry prior to becoming a mother. Learn more at http://janetettele.com.
