Woolwich hunter found hypothermic in Westport Island
Expected to fully recover
Donald Merrill, 58, of Woolwich was reported overdue by his hunting party just before 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. With the recent snow, game wardens began to track Merrill off Files Point Road in Westport Island and did so for more than one mile.
Merrill travelled over wet, uneven terrain and it was clear he began to crawl on the ground over time. Game wardens then tried to intercept his track off Baker Road and soon located Merrill a short distance in the woods around 9:30 p.m.
Merrill had recent health issues and he was found very hypothermic. Westport Fire and Rescue responded and transported Merrill to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. It is expected Merrill will recover fully.
