Part of a retaining wall at the newly constructed Railroad Avenue parking lot has fallen over and will be replaced in the spring when work resumes on Maine Department of Transportation’s downtown project.

Wiscasset Town Manager Marian Anderson reported the damage occurred several weeks ago. In response to a Dec. 17 email from the Wiscasset Newspaper, she stated the damage resulted from “the weight of the snow against the wall, during the town's clearing of the lot.”

Anderson added, she learned of it shortly after it happened.

“My understanding is MDOT will repair and strengthen the wall when construction commences in the spring,” she wrote.

Reached for comment Monday morning in Augusta, MDOT Project Manager Ernie Martin confirmed his office had been made aware of damage to the wall.

“(It) will be addressed in the spring by MaineDOT and contractor (Pike industries) with no cost incurred by (the) town,” he wrote in an email.

The downtown construction project was shut down for the winter on Dec. 5. It’s expected to resume, weather permitting, April 15.

The remaining work includes paving the parking lot on the site of the former Haggett garage, construction of the new Main Street sidewalks, installing the two traffic and pedestrian crossing signals and permanent signage.

Completion is projected for Oct. 19.
