Residents: Train at Wiscasset crossing briefly blocks traffic
A Route 144, Wiscasset couple observed vehicles turning around in either direction briefly Saturday when, the couple said, a freight train was stuck at the crossing. The southbound train then backed up to get off the roadway until an icy buildup was axed and salted and the train continued south, Gordon and Lynne Kontrath told the Wiscasset Newspaper.
For the 10 or so minutes the train blocked traffic, some motorists turned around in their driveway and ones on the other side of the crossing turned around at the Copy Shop, Gordon Kontrath said.
Shortly after, Lincoln County Communications confirmed the train was out of the road. Messages to Central Maine and Quebec Railway and Maine Department of Transportation were not immediately returned.
