Share your stories of Edgecomb’s Merry Barn
The renovations are complete and the Merry Barn in Edgecomb is opening its doors for the first of many community events. Community Writes! will be held this Sunday, June 9, at the Merry Barn, 417 River Road, Edgecomb.
From the early 1950s to the mid 1970s, the Merry Barn was a dance hall. Have a story or memory to share, or one from your parents or grandparents? Stop by anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. to write, draw or tell your stories. We hope to create an anthology of memories, preserving the rich history of this beautiful landmark as it begins its newest chapter as a literacy center. Light refreshments will be served.
Stephanie Noyes McSherry, a literacy educator, has realized her new vision for this gem, whose history dates back to the 1700s. The multiple-story barn has been transformed and will host summer writing retreats for children, literacy workshops for educators, and community events. McSherry’s goal during renovations was to keep as much of the character of the barn as possible, paying tribute to everything that Merry Barn has stood for all these years.
An open house to celebrate the official opening will be held Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information on the Merry Barn’s summer programs and upcoming events, visit merrybarn.com or call 207-752-2018.
