Mark your calendars for the latest film from Academy Award winner Pedro Almodóvar, “Pain and Glory,” coming to Lincoln Theater opening Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. The 2019 Spanish drama is a loose self-portrait of Almodóvar’s own life, sharing with audiences the healing power of art.

“Pain and Glory” tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline, with some of these reencounters playing out in real time, and others recalled through flashbacks. First loves, second loves, his mother, mortality, an actor with whom the director worked, the sixties, the eighties, the present and the emptiness, the immeasurable emptiness at the impossibility of continuing to film. “Pain and Glory” talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need, he also finds his salvation. The film stars Antonio Banderas (The Skin I Live in; The Mask of Zorro; Desperado), Asier Etxeandia (Velvet; The Bride), Leonardo Sbaraglia (Wild Tales), Julieta Serrano (Matador), and Penélope Cruz (Volver; Vanilla Sky).

Originally released in Spain, “Pain and Glory” made its international debut at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where the film was nominated for 4 festival awards, including the Palme d’Or - the highest award a film can receive at the Cannes Film Festival. Banderas came out on top with the award for Best Actor and composer Alberto Iglesias took home the award for Best Soundtrack. In addition, the film is also on the list of those submitted for consideration for the upcoming Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category (the category previously known as Best Foreign Language Film). These recognitions are no surprise, as writer and director Pedro Almodóvar is considered the most internationally acclaimed Spanish filmmaker of today. Almodóvar is best known for his 2006 film “Volver,” and he was awarded the 2003 Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay for his work on the film “Hable con ella.”

Experience Almodóvar’s passion for cinema on the big screen. Tickets are regular movie prices: $8/adult, and $6/theater members and for youth 18 and under. “Pain and Glory” is in Spanish with English subtitles, and is rated R for drug use, some graphic nudity and language.
