UPDATE: The resignation accepted March 10 was from PreK teacher Amy Mitchell; on Friday, Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood provided Mitchell’s resignation letter to Wiscasset Newspaper.
The Wiscasset School Committee on Tuesday night, March 10 celebrated the success of the Wiscasset Middle High School math team. Matt Eckert, Gabby Leavitt and Kaitlyn Main, their coaches, WMHS teachers Chris Hammond and Marija Randall, and other team members will head to the state competition on March 31 at the Augusta Civic Center.
The team came in third at the most recent Central Maine Math League meet. WMHS Assistant Principal Warren Cossette noted the team placed its highest since 2008 and has been the most competitive overall since 1994. Cossette also noted other successes WMHS students have had lately, from playing with the Opus One Big Band, to excelling at the one-act play festival, to placements in art shows, and more.
Superintendent Terry Wood reported teachers are preparing for Maine Education Assessment (MEA) testing which will happen at Wiscasset Elementary School in the next two weeks. And Wood said teacher contract negotiations will begin March 25, and there were seven candidates for WES principal. Wood will be gathering the committee for the application review and interview process.
Wood said the after school program was going well. with 66 students participating. The first hour is academic and the second hour is enrichment; students sign up for their enrichment activities. Finally, Wood said enrollment at WES is at 228, about the same as at the beginning of the year.
The scheduled first reading of revisions to the graduation requirements policy was reset for the April meeting to give the policy committee more time. Wood also reported that budget discussions are ongoing and she should have a draft for the committee by the April meeting.
The committee entered into executive session to discuss a personnel matter. After about 25 minutes, the committee returned and voted to accept the resignation discussed during the executive session. The person’s name was not immediately announced. At Wiscasset Newspaper’s request, Wood provided the resignation letter Friday. PreK teacher Amy Mitchell resigned in the letter dated March 6.
“We have hired a long term sub,” Wood said in an email response to a question Friday.
The committee meets next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 at WMHS.
