Distance learning ends June 5 for Edgecomb Eddy students
In a virtual meeting April 17, the Edgecomb School Committee approved June 5 as the last distance learning day for 2019-20. The committee and Edgecomb Eddy School teachers’ union also entered into a memorandum of understanding which created three non-paid, in-service workshop teacher days. June 8 will be the last day for Edgecomb Eddy teachers. Alternative Organizational Structure (AOS) 98 Superintendent Dr. Keith Laser reported teachers would use those days in preparation for the next school year.
The amended school calendar differed from one originally recommended by Laser for schools in Edgecomb, Boothbay Harbor, Southport and Georgetown. Laser initially proposed May 29 as the last distance learning day and June 1-12 used for teacher preparation for the 2020-21 school year. But his proposal changed after Department of Education Commissioner Pender Makin recommended Maine public schools continue distance learning until the end of the school year.
This resulted in the Edgecomb School Committee approving the amended school calendar. The committee also approved continuing the school lunch program until June 12.
The committee meets next at 6 p.m. May 11.
