Westport Island talks fast cars, slow internet
Westport Island is looking to boost the town office’s internet service and get internet for Wright Landing House. Selectmen heard Monday night via UberConference, town office staff have been getting kicked off their computer systems.
“Whether it’s the WiFi or what it is, we can’t have that happen,” Third Selectman Ross Norton said. He requested the board look into buying higher speed internet. Broadband and Cable Committee member and firefighter Jason Kates said the fire department just upgraded from the free service the town office gets via cable service, to a tier meeting participants said will cost $50 the first year and $69 in year two. “We’re just not able to use the internet from the town office. It’s terrible,” Kates said.
Jeff Tarbox of the history committee said Wright Landing House will need “decent” internet, too.
First Selectman George Richardson Jr. asked Kates and Tarbox to get information from Spectrum. Selectmen plan to talk internet service again Monday, Aug. 17.
They are also considering suggesting Doggett Road residents put up 25 mph speed limit signs. Second Selectman Gerald Bodmer said improvements to the road have led to speeding complaints. “It’s paved, and it’s better than it’s been in years,” Bodmer explained. “It was a land mine over there. Now it’s smooth, and it’s two lanes and (some drivers) open it up on that road and they go way too fast ... I’ve been told.”
The board OK’d storing election equipment in selectmen’s former office at the old town hall. The history committee is moving out of the space and into Wright Landing House, Richardson said.
