Westport Island selectmen meet in-person, approve internet upgrade
After months of teleconference calls due to the pandemic, Westport Island selectmen met in the old town hall Monday night. Chairs were spaced more than six feet apart, attendees wore masks, and the doors were left wide open.
The board received one bid for a plowing contract, from G & D Cromwell for a total of $345,000 over three years based on $4,576.20 per mile for approximately 25.13 miles. The bid was read aloud but will be decided at a later date.
As discussions continued on increased internet access for the town office, Broadband and Cable Committee member Jason Kates confirmed he would donate a firewall switch and modem, saving the town money. Selectmen voted to move forward with the first year of the month-to-month internet service, which will total $550 for the first year. The installation will be free and Kates will handle arranging the change. Selectmen also voted to allow internet access at Wright Landing House. If the house is able to be classified as a residence, the cost will be $29.99 a month, to be paid for by the 501c (3) arm of the Friends of Westport Island History.
Kates discussed a storage unit for the fire department and Selectman Ross Norton confirmed the building permit fee would be waived.
