Westport Island tax rate up 8%
Westport Island’s property tax rate is rising from last year’s $7.46 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation to $8.10, according to information First Selectman George Richardson provided in Monday night’s UberConference meeting. Richardson said selectmen raised the rate as little as they could, given a paving project and higher school and county tabs.
Also Monday, selectmen agreed to pay local firm G & D Cromwell to plow, at $115,000 a year for three years; sign the annual Wiscasset Transfer Station contract, for $77,870; and spend up to $150 for work at Wright House, including adding a post, cement for a handicap access walkway, paint and buttoners for shutters, and paint for a shed.
Third Selectman Ross Norton is researching wiring for the sand and salt shed door. “We need to get that fixed before winter,” Richardson said. And Jeff Tarbox invited selectmen to join the history committee and the nonprofit Friends of Westport Island History for the history center’s grand opening at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 at Wright House.
