Rain fails to impede Dresden Memorial Day celebration
A small group of bystanders withstood soggy conditions to attend Memorial Day services at Pownalorough Courthouse in Dresden May 31.
"This is the 67th year that we have held ceremonies here,” said Jay Robbins representing Lincoln County Historical Association.
After assembling at the courthouse flagpole, reenactors from Colonial Maine Living History Association led organizers who were from Masonic Lodge #103 to the historic Old Courthouse Cemetery. Lodge Chaplain Leon McCreary read a prayer in recognition of the nine veterans buried there. “We thank you for the freedom you have given us,” said McCreary.
Sawyer Andrews, 6, then placed lilac bouquets on the graves, six representing those lost in the War of 1812, two from the Civil War and one from the Revolutionary War. Resident Dave Probert then helped replace and raise a new flag to conclude the event.
