Westport Island boy loves new bike
Last year, Tanner Davis’ bicycle popped a tire and the bearings went. Last week, the Westport Island boy, 7, got a new Huffy bike Doug Davis said is just the right size for his son.
“I love it,” the younger Davis said in a joint phone interview Sunday night. The incoming Wiscasset Elementary School third grader was just back from a ride.
His father picked up the bike Friday at the masons’ Lincoln Lodge of Wiscasset on Fort Hill Street. There, he met with Julie Cromwell of Coastal Cromwell Properties. “I’m glad that they’re getting involved like that. It’s great,” Doug Davis said of the masons and Cromwell. Mason Dave Renfro said the business donated the money for the masons to buy the bike, and the masons did the rest. The masons also recently bought and assembled bikes for other area students through Bikes for Books; several bikes went to WES students.
Renfro explained, he was going around asking for donations for Bikes for Books, when Cromwell offered to buy a bike for one more child. Tanner Davis was chosen from an additional group of students who were not picked in the original raffle, Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood said Monday.
The masons’ efforts to give children bikes is extraordinary, Wood said. “They go above and beyond finding opportunities to benefit our students inside school and outside school.”
