‘Heavenly’ yard sale Aug. 21
St. Philip’s Church on Hodge Street, Wiscasset, will hold a Heavenly Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds will help maintain the 198-year-old historic church building and support its Bargain Basement, which provides clothing, household supplies, furniture, books and more to local people in need, a key part of the congregation’s mission, as well as to adventuresome shoppers of all kinds. The yard sale will also include antiques.
St. Philip’s is one of the oldest church structures in continuous use in Lincoln County. This architectural treasure was constructed by Baptists in 1823 and bought by Episcopalians in 1856; it has been Wiscasset’s Episcopal church ever since. In 1857-1858, it was remodeled by prominent architect Francis Fassett in the Victorian Gothic style. Fassett added the distinctive steeple and belfry and the Stick Style house next door, to serve as the parsonage, now a private home.
The church is asking for donations from your attics, closets, barns and garages to add to the sale. These can be delivered to the shed on the north side of the church any time before Aug. 21. Want to lend a hand? Please call Bethany Soule at 350-0627 or come to St. Philip’s on Friday afternoon, Aug. 20.
