River Arts of Damariscotta will host a reading by local author Kay Tobler Liss on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 3-4:30 p.m. Her novel, “The Last Resort,” published by Plain View Press, explores themes of environmental and social justice.

In “The Last Resort,” Paul Collins, a Manhattan attorney in turmoil, finds a remote resort on the end of Long Island, where a surfer, a fisherman, and a Montaukett woman fighting to preserve ancestral land give him an appreciation of nature and a new purpose in life.

Kay Tobler Liss also profiles the life of an artist in “The Last Resort” through her character Bertrand who reflects upon both the practical and spiritual sides of making art.

Copies of The Last Resort will be available for sale at the book talk and the author will be available to sign copies after the reading.

As a writer and editor, Kay Tobler Liss worked for newspapers and magazines in New York and Maine for many decades, including Sunstorm Arts, House and Hamptons Magazine, and was managing editor of The Shelter Island Reporter. She studied Literature at Bard College and Environmental Studies at Southampton College and taught courses in both fields in New York and Maine. She lived in Montauk, New York for 13 years and now lives in Maine where she has been active in environmental and social justice organizations for years.
