Students, instructor honored for mural
12 students from Lincoln Academy were given an assignment: create 10 panels, each with its own personality, but with the ability to flow from one to the other. The result? Spectacular!
On June 2 students, teachers, parents, administrators and neighbors gathered at Sheepscot Harbour Village & Resort in Edgecomb where the mural is permanently installed to celebrate the finished project.
Speeches were made, door prizes handed out, and raffles were won. John Richardson, former Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development, spoke with students on the future of arts in Maine, economic development and their future roles within their community.
A barbecue and pool party followed the informal ceremony.
“This was a great opportunity for the students to learn, or practice, their project management skills,” said Lincoln Academy visual arts instructor Nina Sylvia. “They were able to be creative and self-expressive but still had to collaborate with each other on the final vision. I think they are all pretty happy with the results. I know I am.”
Tony Casella, the proud new owner of the mural, said he couldn’t be happier with how it came out. “I really wanted to do something with the local school and the students and this seemed like the perfect fit.”
The mural now covers one side of a Pod that houses maintenance gear. With new grass coming in, a beautiful native boulder, shrubs and trees to be planted, the space has a park-like feel. “A few short months ago, this was an empty dirt lot. Now look at it! We hope the community enjoys this space.”
Sylvia was enjoying the pool party when Casella presented her with a $2,000 check, a donation for the Lincoln Academy art program.
