Susan C. Smith
Susan Carrington Smith passed away on Dec. 18, 2021 at 11 a.m.
She was born Oct. 11, 1945 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, daughter of Richard D. and Doris W. Smith.
Susan was educated in Greenfield public schools and graduated from Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School for Girls in Greenfield. While at Stoneleigh, she was active in athletics and president of the Stoneleigh Riding Club. She used to chuckle when she said, “I was a day student, my horse was a boarder!”
Throughout life, Susan was an accomplished horsewoman and highly regarded in that field. She instructed many young and old in horsemanship, sharing her love of horses and the outdoors.
Susan received college degrees in early childhood education and in psychology. She will be remembered by many former students, as Susan taught school in Vermont and Massachusetts for nearly 40 years.
Her sense of humor and ready smile were appreciated by all who knew her. Susan loved animals, the outdoors and the ocean; these topics were regularly woven into her classroom teaching.
Upon retirement, Susan fulfilled a lifelong dream of living in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She and her husband, Leslie G. Crowell, purchased a home there and made a dream come true.
Loving the ocean and the woods, Susan would often be found searching for sea glass and “treasures” along the shore, and whenever possible, fishing for brook trout – a lifelong passion. She loved the woods and streams and if she caught a “brookie,” that was an added bonus.
At Susan’s request, there will be no service. She asked that you take a moment to remember a special time you spent with her and to be a good steward of the Earth. Plant a tree, plant a garden, take a child fishing, care for nature and more.
