Joseph S.W. Parker
Joseph Stedman Williams Parker, of Marblehead, Mass., and Southport, beloved husband of Joan (Falvey) Parker, died Monday evening, June 10, 2013 at Salem Hospital surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Margery Cole Moses of Salem, and James P. Parker of Marblehead and Brookline. He was born in Boston and was raised in Salem and Marblehead. Joe graduated from the Noble & Greenough School of Dedham, Mass., in 1949 and attended Dartmouth College, class of ’53 where he skied and rowed crew.
He proudly served three years in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War, two of those years on the Casco-class cutter Coos Bay in the North Atlantic based out of Portland.
He was the former president of Sterling-Clark-Lurton Corporation, a paint and coatings manufacturer in Malden, Mass., founded by his grandfather, Albert C. Cole. Joe was the former chairman of the board of Verlan Fire Insurance Company and former director of the Bank for Savings in Malden.
He was a long time member of the Malden Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president. He served as a director on the National Paint and Coatings Association, New England Coatings Association and was the past president of the Massachusetts Paint Council.
Joe was a former trustee of Tower School in Marblehead, Noble & Greenough School, and the Pleon Yacht Club, a junior yacht club in Marblehead dedicated to teaching children the fine art of sailing. Joe loved nothing more than being on his boat cruising the coast of Maine with his family and friends. He shared his love of the sea with his children and grandchildren. Joe was a member of the Eastern Yacht Club and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, and a former member of the Gut N’Feathers club.
He is also survived by daughters, Sarah Cave (Michael) of Wilmot Flat, N.H., Margaret Rand (Jonathan) of Tilton, N.H., and Elizabeth W. Parker of Marblehead, Mass.; and his son Joseph Stedman Williams Parker, Jr. (Libby) of Marblehead, Mass. Joe was particularly proud of his grandchildren, M. Parker Cave, Christopher W. Cave, Jennifer C. Rand, Charles F. Rand, Joseph S. W. (Will) Parker, III and Sam A.D. Parker of Marblehead; his sisters, Caroline M. Stride of Gloucester Mass., Tina P. Read of So. Dartmouth, Mass., his brothers, John A.S. McGlennon of Annisquam, Mass., and Edward W. Parker, of Holderness, N.H.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Albert C. Parker of Marblehead, Mass., and Richard Darroch McGlennon of Salem, Mass.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28 at the Eastern Yacht Club, 47 Foster Street, Marblehead, Mass. Relatives and friends respectively invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Noble and Greenough School, 10 Campus Drive, Dedham, Mass. 02026 or the Pleon Yacht Club Sailing Program, 42 Foster Street, P.O. Box 160, Marblehead, MA 01945.
