Wiscasset gets ‘flamingo’ flockings
Been seeing more pink flamingos than usual in Wiscasset lately? Thank a Boothbay Harbor woman. Meagan Cope is setting up surprise flockings. One was at the town office; another, the water district, Cope said. She said she has also put the fake flamingos at houses and at businesses including Possibilities Salon and Coastal Electronics.
In a phone interview Friday and in emails and texts, Cope, crowned Ms. Central Maine 2022 on Feb. 16 and planning to “compete for my dream job of Ms. Maine American Women of Service at the Maine American Women of Service Pageant” in Portland in September, described the point of the flockings. “(They are) to raise money for my journey and for Crossroads, a 501c3 youth organization nonprofit, and Crown CARES, a youth organization that focuses on lowering the percentage of bullying in schools. All of the fees I have to pay as well go straight back to Crossroads since they are the ones who put it on. My goal is to raise at least $1,000 since the minimum to qualify for the title of Maine’s Ambassador is $900.” As of the interview, she was about halfway to her goal. “Hopefully (this) will keep going with the momentum it has been.”
She added, “I’ve been debating on doing the flocking a bit longer just because so many people have reached out!”
If the surprise is not welcome, the recipient can tell Cope. Her contact information is on the paperwork she leaves behind. “It’s all done out of fun, but I also respect if someone may not want them on the lawn.”
Cope is not a first-time flocker. She was in a flamingo fundraiser while growing up in Dresden and attending Hall-Dale High School. She has two tubs of flamingos about 20 inches tall and a third tub of “You got flocked” signs and smaller flamingos, about seven inches.
Selectmen’s Chair Sarah Whitfield said via email Monday, the sight of flamingos at the municipal building “certainly brought a smile to my face as I drove by and I have seen them on other yards since then.”
