Railway museum buys neighboring acre
The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum has secured another right of way to the old rail route.
The approximately one-acre wooded lot borders the nonprofit museum in Alna, so eventually the track there could be restored and rail trips could be lengthened, museum leaders said.
“The opportunity presented itself, so we jumped on it,” the museum's president Stephen Zuppa said.
“We're extremely pleased,” museum board member Gordon Davis said.
Melissa Kelly sold the railway the lot along Trout Brook. “I was glad to do it,” said Kelly, who has taken her children to many events at the museum.
The museum now either owns or has agreements on rights of way to about three-quarters of the Alna portion of the railway's route, Zuppa said.
The original railway ran from Wiscasset to Albion from the 1890s to the 1930s.
Extending the track helps to restore the railroad, inspire volunteers and donors, and encourage return visits to check out progress, according to the organization's long-range plan, updated in 2012.
The plan is available at www.wwfry.org. The website also has train ride schedules and information on the museum's next big event, an ice cream social July 6.
