The price for Wright
When it came to Wright Landing, Westport Island voters made one thing very clear:
The building's future will remain in the town's hands.
Voters on Friday, June 28 voted down the referendum for the Wright House, 176 against, 70 for, during the Westport Island town meeting secret ballot election.
Had the referendum passed, it would have granted $5,000 to the board of selectmen to establish an easement, to obtain an independent appraisal and to authorize the board to put the house site and an amount of land on the market.
The boat launch and parking lot would have remained public property, but the easement could have potentially parceled-out the house and a small amount of land, which is currently being rented.
Voters also approved upping the amount given to volunteers who maintained the house. Originally, voters were to approve $100 but instead increased the amount to $500.
The Wright House was once a private residence with a private boat launch. Currently, the building is rented and the boat launch is now public.
It wasn't just the Wright House on the docket; voters gave the thumbs-up to a 1.75 percent increase for town officers.
Westport Island also reelected George Richardson Jr. as first selectman with 176 votes. Stanley Lane was second with 17 votes and Dennis Dunbar was third with 13 votes.
Garry Cromwell was voted in as road commissioner with 207 votes, while E. Davies Allan was second with 14 votes.
For the budget committee, there were two openings but only one candidate. Roxanne Andrews netted 198 votes, David Niederstadt had six write-in votes and outgoing budget committee member Mort Mendes had three write-in votes.
