CTL students enjoy annual African American Read In
Last Tuesday students at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) enjoyed a wonderful day of shared literacy during our annual African American Read In. CTL has participated in this national event since it began in 1990. Each February, schools around the country gather poetry collections, novels, and popular picture books by African American authors for a morning of reading, reflection, and joy.
Some favorite authors in kindergarten through sixth grade this year were Faith Ringgold, Nikki Giovanni, Kadir Nelson, Jaqueline Woodson, Eloise Greenfield, Donald Crews, and Ashley Bryan. Our 7th and 8th graders examined poetry anthologies and collections, novels in verse, and longer works of prose by African American authors.
Several of these books made their way into students' backpacks for further reading.
