Docent opportunities at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, built in 1827, welcomes guests for the season. We are open seven days a week from now through Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October with volunteer docent guides who share the history of the lighthouse and our mid-coast surroundings.
If you dreamed of being a lighthouse keeper when you were little and enjoy chatting with visitors to Maine, this is an opportunity for you.
The Friends of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse work to build its docent roster following the time closed during the pandemic. This season proves already to be a busy one and we could use your help.
Docents usually work two 3-hour shifts a month. As a team, the Friends make sure all hours are covered. With additional docents, we aim to extend Sunday hours, as well. Currently, we are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Training is provided. Many of our docents have volunteered since 2007 when the lighthouse was renovated and opened to the public. They continue because the experience is rewarding.
The people of Maine voted to put the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse on the Maine quarter in 2003. Now you can be a keeper of this special historic landmark. Please consider becoming a docent so that visitors can learn the fascinating history of the lighthouse, climb the tower to enjoy the scenic view, and see the original Fresnel Lens installed in 1856 that nightly still beams its light for mariners.
