Walter H. Sherman, 93, a lifelong resident of Wiscasset died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Walter was born in Wiscasset on October 11, 1919, a son of Harold S. and Florence E. (Matthews) Sherman.

He graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1937 and from Maine Central Institute in 1939.

He then graduated from Becker College in 1941 and entered the U.S. Army Air Force, serving from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific during World War II.

On January 19, 1946 he married Mona Elizabeth "Betty" Richardson. He and his family co-owned Wiscasset Lumber, retiring in 1983. On September 24, 1995 he married Sally Grover.

He loved golf, bowling, playing cards, watching the Red Sox and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masons, the Wiscasset Fire Society, the Wiscasset Senior Center and the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.

He was very active in the community, serving on the Wiscasset School Board, the Wiscasset School District from 1959-1980, the Town Planning Committee, Wiscasset Industrial Development Corp., the Airport Committee and as the trustee of the Wiscasset Library. He served as the Jury Commissioner from 1960-1975.

He served as president and for many years, as a director of the the Retail Lumberman's Association of Maine and as a director of the Northeast Retail Lumberman's Association. Walter, together with his brothers, started Wiscasset Little League Baseball. The middle school field, Sherman Park was named after them.

He was predeceased by his first wife Betty Sherman on September 12, 1992, one son, Walter Sherman Jr. on July 6, 1951 and two brothers, Stanton Sherman and Gerald Sherman.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Sherman of Wiscasset; one daughter, Nancy Roby and her husband Wallace of Wiscasset; three stepdaughters, Donna Thomas and her husband Steven of New Hampshire, Sandra Craig and her husband Glen of Wiscasset and Debra MacPhee and her husband Bruce of Wiscasset; one grandson, Daniel Brown; nine step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, Ashley Rose Brown and Philip Julian Brown, one step-great-granddaughter, three nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 4 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, High Street, Wiscasset. Burial will be later at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset.
