Rain, what rain?
Shelli Rottman of Brooklyn, New York, liked two things best about her time at the Wiscasset Art Walk July 25: The flow of people it drew created that bustling feel she enjoys; and it was a chance to just walk around for a couple hours instead of hopping in and out of a car.
Staying on Westport Island while vacationing with sister Sonia Chawla of Denver, Colorado, they've had to drive to get to everything, Rottman said.
Asked how they liked Wiscasset, Chawla said: “It's fantastic. I can see why they call it the prettiest little town in Maine.”
Shops stayed open until 8 p.m., hometown musicians performed along Main Street, Alna's Linda Verney and her draft horses gave wagon rides through historic neighborhoods, and couples visiting Maine laughed together at a wine-tasting inside Treat's.
Rain arrived about an hour into the three-hour event, but didn't halt activities including a Lynn Deeves concert on the town common.
“If I can work outside all day in the rain I can sure hang out in it,” said Wiscasset's Marc Tenney. The Bath Iron Works employee came to the concert with his family.
The trees on the common provided some natural cover from the rain; several attendees including Town Manager Laurie Smith were prepared with umbrellas.
Inside Sylvan Gallery down the hill, Robert Noreika of Rock Hill, Connecticut, was working swiftly on oil paintings. One depicted the downtown scape outside the gallery window.
Gallery co-owner Ann Scanlan was pleased with the evening's turnout. “We would usually be closed by now,” she said near a table of hors d'oeuvres.
The next art walk in the village is August 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. The next concert in the “Alive on the River” series on the common will be the country band Dyer Neck Gang, sponsored by Sprague's Lobster Bake and Wiscasset Ford, at 6 p.m. August 1.
