A welcoming and familiar face at Cheney Insurance since 1993, Debbie Furman recently celebrated the culmination of her 30-year career at Cheney Insurance, a locally owned independent agency.  With a background as a salon owner and then working for her husband’s land surveying business, Debbie joined the team at Cheney three decades ago, despite having no prior experience in the insurance industry; a decision that blossomed into a long and rewarding partnership between employer and employee.

Originally starting in reception, Debbie has excelled at her role as a Support Professional for many years now. Reflecting on what has changed over the years, Debbie recalls the days before email, Zoom, and electronic storage of documents – a time when only paper files existed, and messages were handwritten on notepads. Over the course of her time at the insurance agency, Debbie has learned three different computer management systems, as the office kept pace with technological advances. Though much has changed since Debbie’s early days at Cheney Insurance, her devotion to the company and commitment to customer service has been steadfast. When asked what she will miss most about her career in insurance, Debbie shared she will especially miss working for the close-knit, local, family-owned company, citing the organization’s commitment to its employees. 

The office staff gathered recently for a buffet lunch and surprised Debbie with a cake, banners, balloons, and retirement gifts, as everyone celebrated her remarkable achievement. Company owner Dennis Hilton reminisced about the day in 1993 when he first interviewed Debbie, and her contributions to the company, and thanked her for her loyal service.

To anyone considering a career in insurance, Debbie shares the fulfillment that comes from helping community members insure and protect the things they love. “It’s a community service, really. It’s more than just a job; it’s a career”, she adds. Debbie looks forward to spending her retirement travelling with her husband, adopting a puppy, and relaxing at the lake during the summer months.
