Don Josephson exhibit at Studio 53
Don Josephson shows a selection of work from his Edgecomb studio at Studio 53. Adventurous in life, fearless with paint, Josephson brings his “specimen life” of energy and spontaneity, his world and his travels through it. His works are showing concurrently with Lynne Seitzer's “Moments in Time: Urban Landscape” until August 31.
For the past decade Josephson has divided his time working in his studio here and one he keeps in Puerto Escondidio, Oaxaca, Mexico. Previous to Oaxaca, he spent seven years in the Atlantic jungles of Costa Rica (big bugs), a stint in southern California, and a fun couple of springs in France.
“My work is a reverie, sired through spectacular people and places on this planet and the colorful experience of now,” Josephson said.
Painting is more about the sensation, rather than the scenes of his journeys, his works are abstract thoughts from places removed. The thought of distance, the jolt of time of climate, the excitement of color, new culture, are seminal aspects of his work.
“I have been sighted working out of doors, and I'm forever paging through my sketch books and drawing from my paintings as I work,” Josephson said. “The end result may be a Maine series done in Mexico, or vice versa. I feel more passion with my work done in this manner.”
“Brought up in a dory,” Josephson was born and raised in Gloucester, Mass., where the creative juices flow. He believes writers, sculptors, painters; one must go around with duct taped eyes so as not to see the historic creative buzz that permiates that area.
At an early age, nudged by this energy and sorting it all out, first in commercial art, then as a student of fine art at The Institute of Boston, Josephson finally ditched it all and came to Edgecomb in 1991 to paint.
Studio 53 is located at 53 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor. For more information call 207-633-2755.
