Molnlycke stays on 'parallel paths' to expansion
Molnlycke Health Care is continuing its work toward a possible expansion in either Wiscasset or Brunswick, a company official said August 2.
“Nothing has changed. We're still moving on parallel paths,” said James Detert, Molnlycke's Business Development Director for the Americas.
Days earlier, Wiscasset selectmen responded enthusiastically to a presentation by Detert and another company official. A Wiscasset expansion would add 10 to 30 jobs and nearly double the size of the company's plant on Twin Rivers Drive, company officials have said.
“I think it was very positive,” Detert said of the July 30 meeting. Molnlycke has always had good relationships with both Wiscasset and Brunswick, he added.
Molnlycke recently built a plant at the site of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.
“Molnlycke is a desirable business and the town would be excited to have them expand here,” Brunswick Town Manager Gary Brown wrote in an August 1 response to a Wiscasset Newspaper email.
Next Tuesday, August 13, Wiscasset selectmen are expected to consider a tax financing plan that would be key to a local Molnlycke expansion. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the municipal building.
Wiscasset voters and the state would need to approve the financing plan.
Brunswick's town council has just passed a pair of tax financing plans that would encompass the former base, including the possible site of a second Molnlycke building. As with Wiscasset, the state needs to OK those plans. However, under the town council form of government, the Brunswick plans don't need local voters' approval.
“(The plans) will be submitted to the State for approval. Once approved, the Council will be in a position to entertain discussions with Molnlycke and other businesses that may want locate at the former (base),” Brown wrote.
Molnlycke's board is expected to decide about expansion in mid-September.
