Cavanaugh exhibit at Bay Street Studio
36 of Tom Cavanaugh's paintings have been shipped from his Navarre Beach, Fla., studio and will be exhibited at his new outdoor gallery on Bay Street in Boothbay Harbor.
These works have been mounted on rigid display panels, visible from Atlantic Avenue and best viewed as they border the lawn and parking area on the harbor side of the studio. Consistent with the artist's other productions, all works on displayed are varied in subject matter and style.
The quiet nine figures in the “Baptism” painting are from a recent series on Louisiana plantation life of the 1900-1910 period. By contrast, the bold red and black (June 2013) Wabash Cannonball races pell-mell toward the viewer, startling a confused white bird into flight.
Cavanaugh established the Bay Street Studio in 1950, a lodge for guests and writers and as an art supply store. The lodge concept continued for 50 years when, in 2000, he opened a small museum for exotic antiques.
The new plein-air exhibition area will considerably enlarge the studio's original 1955 “gallery on the street,” then a first of its kind in Boothbay Harbor art circles.
The Bay Street Studio, located at 6 Bay Street on the east side of Boothbay Harbor, is open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On rainy days, the works in the street galleries are not on display.
