‘Mapping Maine’: A Boothbay Region Historical Society fundraiser
For the second straight year, Boothbay Region Historical Society is fortunate enough to partner with Harbor Theater, bringing you special historical programming in their wonderful cinema setting. This year we are celebrating Maine’s (and Boothbay’s) cartographic history with a program entitled “Mapping Maine” on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
This packed evening includes a special abbreviated viewing of the MPBN “From the Vault” documentary, “Maine on the Map,” originally shown in 1996, focusing on early maps of Maine. Then, Libby Bischof, Executive Director of Osher Map Library in Portland, brings the topic of maps into the present day and Boothbay region with her talk, “The Romance Map of Maine: Boothbay Women and Pictorial Mapmaking in the 20th Century.” The talk uses a beautifully illustrated 1936 map of Maine, compiled by Boothbay schoolteacher Grace F. Dodge and summer resident Alice Fowler, and illustrated by Mildred Greene to discuss the concept of pictorial maps, which rose to popularity in the 20th century.
Theater opens at 5 p.m. with beverages and light refreshments included in the $30 ticket price. For full information and tickets, visit https://boothbayhistorical.org/events-page/ or call 207-633-0820. Be sure to check out the details of our raffle for a rare illustrated map too!
