Eugene A. Huskins
Eugene Alfred Huskins, 77, of Southport passed away peacefully on Aug. 8, 2024 at Bella Point Assisted Living Facility in Freeport, Maine.
Gene grew up on Southport Island and attended local schools.
Gene was born on Dec. 21, 1946 in Boothbay Harbor to Alfred R. and Estella M. Huskins. His parents instilled in him a strong sense of community and service. He was a pillar of his community and touched the lives of countless individuals through his selfless dedication. He served as chairman of the Southport Board of Selectman for many years and worked at several boatyards in the Boothbay region as a metal fabricator, welder and service manager throughout his life. In his later years, he became a Maine Certified Assessor and assessed many properties for various towns in Lincoln County. He was no stranger to hard work.
He loved both history and music and played guitar in several local country and western bands in his youth. He was a proud founding member of the 3rd Maine Voluntary Infantry out of Bath, reinacting throughout the 125th anniversary of the American Civil War. During his time with the regiment he received various promotions and accolades as both a historian and an educator.
Being an avid animal lover, Gene found great joy in watching the fish in his fish tanks and his dogs, who he treated like his children. During his last few years he enjoyed telling stories of his past, listening to his Sherlock Holmes audio books and eating ice cream every chance he got.
Eugene leaves behind his wife, Vicki, of Freeport; her two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his three children and their families: Bethany Teele and her husband William of Boothbay, Kelly Fosterling and her husband John of Concord, New Hampshire, and Mark Huskins and his wife Allison of Bedford, New Hampshire; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Being the humble soul he was, at his request there will be no service. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Bella Point Assisted Living facility as well as CHANS hospice for their unwavering care and support.
Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine.
