The new show at Gleason Fine Art, “Sean Beavers: Wood, Water, Stone and Seed,” opens on Thursday, Aug. 22. The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Friday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m.

With his remarkable, highly detailed paintings, York artist Beavers has established himself as one of Maine’s most respected artists. He is also that rare artist who has found equal success painting both still lifes and landscapes. While his technical abilities are unmatched, it is Beavers’ keen sense of composition and design that brings the viewer back to his work again and again.

Even as a boy, Beavers felt compelled to draw and paint. After high school, he won a scholarship to the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he earned a bachelor of fine arts and the Rhodes Family Medal for Outstanding Achievement. New York City was exciting, but once Beavers discovered New England, he knew he had to live there. Over a decade ago, he made his home in southern Maine.

Beavers finds the peace and beauty of Maine a constant source of inspiration.

“When I study something in nature there is a connection or understanding that I can’t describe, the beauty just moves me,” Beavers said. “Nature can be quite harsh at times, but there is always balance in it, something melodic to offset the dissonance. It’s that relationship between beauty and despair, that truth, that’s what moves me, that’s what I’m after.”

Beavers' paintings can be seen on book covers and in magazines and newspapers. His works are in public and private collections throughout the United States. He has created commissions for clients ranging from AT&T to the Turner Networks. This is Beavers first solo show with Gleason Fine Art.

“Sean Beavers: Wood, Water, Stone and Seed” runs through Saturday, Sept. 14. The gallery is located at 31 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor.
