“Harold and the Purple Crayon” - (PG; 1 hour, 32 minutes) - Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life – and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hi-jinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
“This is a delightful adaptation that captures the magic of the beloved book while adding a fresh & vibrant perspective. It is a joyous celebration of imagination and creativity; a heartwarming & visually stunning film which leaves a lasting impression.” – Linda Marroc, HeyUGuys
“Green Border” - (PG15; 2 hours, 32 minutes, B&W with English subtitles) - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so-called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine. Opening Friday, Sept. 6, 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, 7 p.m.
“A searing drama about a European refugee crisis that resonates with similar crises in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and yes, America’s southwestern border, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border strikes me as the best and most important film to be released in the US so far this year. That judgment is due not only to the fraught importance of the film’s subject but also to the extraordinary artistry of its making. When I first saw it at last fall’s New York Film Festival, I left the theater literally shaken – not only by the compelling story I’d just witnessed but also by the moment-by-moment power of Holland’s film making….Holland was quoted as saying that her movie ‘encourages empathy with migrants trying to enter Poland.’ That simple, accurate description recalls Roger Ebert’s great definition of movies as machines for creating empathy. No recent movie has honored that definition with more geopolitical prescience and humane passion than Green Border.” – Godfrey Cheshire, RogerEbert.com
“Jamie Wyeth and the Unflinching Eye” - (NR; 84 minutes) - Harbor Theater invites its members to a special, free autumn event featuring the new documentary. At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 a wine and dessert reception precedes the 7 p.m. film. Non-members are welcome to attend with the purchase of regularly priced tickets available after 6:30 p.m.
As the heir to a three-generation dynasty of American painters, Jamie Wyeth has forged his own distinct path in the art world. His work spans iconic figures like John F. Kennedy, Andy Warhol, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Rudolf Nureyev, as well as intimate depictions of animals, Maine’s islands, and personal memories—all through a unique and sometimes unsettling lens. This first feature-length documentary on Wyeth, delves into his life, exploring his struggles and triumphs amid the cultural and political upheavals from the 1960s to the present.
