Maine Lighthouse Day is Sept. 14
Burnt Island Lighthouse will be hosting an open house on Saturday for Maine Lighthouse Day from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
As part of the Return of the Keepers series, Steve and Nancy McCullough and other volunteers from Keepers of Burnt Island Light and the Maine Department of Marine Resources will be on hand to offer tours of the living quarters and the lighthouse tower, buildings and grounds. Steve lived on Burnt Island from 1959-1962 when his dad James was the lighthouse keeper.
If you are ready to learn about the life and times of a lighthouse family prior to electrification, Steve is ready to share his vivid memories and stories of managing the lamp in the Fresnel lens, and operating the mechanics in the bell tower. Volunteers will also tour you through the recently restored lighthouse, keeper’s dwelling, and museum.
