Democrat Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic defeated her Republican opponent Paula Benoit of Phippsburg August 27 in a special election for Senate District 19.

The district, centering around Bath, includes Dresden in Lincoln County.

Unofficial vote totals show Vitelli won the seat vacated by Senate Majority Leader Seth Goodall, who resigned to accept a senior position with the New England regional office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Her election means the Democrats maintain a 19-15-1 majority over the Republicans in the State Senate.
