Wiscasset votes on revised department budgets
I'd like to take the opportunity to remind all of our members of the upcoming vote on September 10 on the revised town department and capital expenditure budgets for the town of Wiscasset. I know I don't need to remind you of the privilege we have as citizens to have a voice in these matters and to have them heard by our town officials.
I also won't need to remind you of the hard work our officials have shouldered throughout the arduous process of public hearings and comment, workout sessions, and careful crafting of their budget recommendations. Now it's time for us to do our part.
As a local business owner and Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, I know firsthand the importance of certain positions in guiding and assisting the economic development and well being of our community. There are some voices who have said that the roles of town planner, tax assessor and code enforcement officer have outlived their purpose and need to be eliminated in the interest of frugality.
Two years ago when our members gathered together before our chamber even existed there was one sentiment in the room amongst all the business owners. They were tired of the negative economic outlook and wanted to band together to forge a brighter future together. They knew with a lot of effort and cooperation that we could improve our community, create a better atmosphere in our towns and see economic prosperity return to our region.
I was inspired by that spirit and still am. It's the spirit that says "what's possible.” It's the spirit that says “the future is going to be better than the past.” It's the spirit that is an essential ingredient to success.
I want to encourage all of you to vote with an eye toward a future that includes growth, opportunity, innovations and even new jobs. None of that will happen by accident. It takes a steady commitment to providing the municipality with tools and resources to go after new businesses and institutions.
Then the town, in turn, can provide the leadership, structure and assistance that businesses require to make a commitment to our community. The future Wiscasset area, in my mind's eye, includes all of these things and more.
We believe in the future prosperity of the Wiscasset Area and encourage Wiscasset voters to get out and vote September 10.
