Artist Jean Kigel's fall to winter exhibit opens November 1
Jean Kigel’s timely exhibit “Sayonara” is featured at her Summer Island Studio in Brunswick for the month of November. Her fall-into-winter theme includes recent Asian brush paintings and watercolors, painted with a dazzling palette of vermillion and violet.
Kigel’s signature piece, “Sayonara II,” captures the feel of fall with its turbulent sky tones. In this farewell to fall scene, a horizon of barren trees, illuminated by a setting sun, is punctuated by reeling birds.
Other works with a burst of fall hues include a twisted vine, a bittersweet branch, a lavender chrysanthemum, a meadow and a misty city scene. As a color-segue from fall to winter, Kigel painted a bright set of 1950s primary color bowls, which symbolically usher the last warmth of autumn into the comfort of the kitchen.
The remainder of this solo show consists of winter paintings in icy, blue tones. Examples of these are northern lights, a gyotaku skate, and an amazing blue lobster.
Award-winning artist Kigel lives and paints at her studio/home in Waldoboro. Her works have been widely exhibited in museum and university and private galleries.
Summer Island Studio is located at 149 Maine Street. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
