This week at the Lincoln Theater
“Didi” - (R; 1 hour, 34 minutes) - In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom. Winner of both the Audience Award and the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival, 2024. Final showtime Thursday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
“Singin’ in the Rain” - (1952; 1 hour, 42 minutes) - Gene Kelly headlines this look at Hollywood’s transition from silents to talkies. Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds team with Gene for fancy footwork, while Jean Hagen is hilarious in her Oscar-nominated performance. We are pleased to be joined at each Classic Film Club screening by film historian and CFC host, Jeannie MacDonald, for a pre-film introduction and post-screening talkback. Playing Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets: Free for Classic Film Club members, $9/adult, and $6/members and youth (18 and under).
“Between the Temples” - (R; 1 hour, 51 minutes) - Ben (Jason Schwartzman) is a 40-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly De Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student. This warm and anxious comedy from prolific writer/director Nathan Silver explores the complexities of belief, connection, and what it means to be a real mensch. Playing Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.; and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10.
“Les Contes d’Hoffman” - The MET Live in HD - (4 hours and 6 minutes – 2 intermissions) – The first opera of the 2024-25 season, and a pre-opera talk at 11:45 a.m. presented by Dr. Morton Achter. Offenbach’s fantastical opera stars French tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title role of the tormented poet. Joining Bernheim is American soprano Erin Morley as Olympia, South African soprano Pretty Yende as Antonia, and French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as Giulietta to complete Hoffmann’s trio of lovers. Marco Armiliato conducts Bartlett Sher’s evocative production, which also features American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the Four Villains and Russian mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya in her company debut as Nicklausse. Sat Oct 5 at 1 PM. There will be a brief post-performance discussion. Tickets: $25/adult, $23/members and $5/youth.
