Westport Island plans holiday events, electric sign
Hello Islanders: "The world is so wonderful that it deserves us to struggle." I can't quote an author, because that phrase is written on a box of pens we got from Amazon. It moved me though, and it sits in my office as a reminder. It is wonderful, isn't it?
Dog Licensing: All dogs that live on Westport Island or visit for 10 days or longer must be licensed every year. Licensing for 2025 is now underway and the state's online dog licensing system is up and running! You will need a current rabies vaccine certificate uploaded as a pdf to get started. If you don't have one, email us. We have many of your rabies certificates scanned in already. Please try to license online before coming in to license in person, as the state has implemented a new system that works best online. If you can't make it work, come on in and we are happy to help!
Builders wanted for Town Hall repairs and projects: Are you a builder or contractor? Know one? We need to hire someone to make repairs to the historic Town Hall and build an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)-compliant entryway structure and bathroom. Please email townclerk@westportisland.gov if interested in any of those projects!
Town Office Holiday Gifts: You probably don't think of the Town Office when you think about holiday shopping, but why not? We have several wonderful Westport Island history books and greeting card packs for sale (check or cash only), and hunting and fishing licenses or snowmobile registration renewals make great stocking stuffers!
End of year donations: Did you know that towns can accept donations? If you would like to help the town pay for things we already approved at the last town meeting, reduce the property tax burden, or pay down debt, the Selectboard would love to hear from you! Or if you have an idea for a future project to put funds towards, the Selectboard can work with you to put it in front of the next town meeting for consideration. See our philanthropy webpage for details!
Snowmobile registration available now: Be ready when the snow flies to hop on your sled and go! Register online or here at the town office.
Electric Sign coming soon: All I want for Christmas is to not have to scale a boulder to announce elections! The town will be acquiring an electric sign before the end of the year. This will enable us to announce many more town meetings and events, and will also help notify residents of important safety information during emergencies. If you have any questions, reach out to townclerk@westportisland.gov
Town Website Businesses Page: Are you a local business owner who would like some free advertising on our town website businesses page? Fill out our Business Registration Form to be added!
Town Committee Vacancies: Looking for a way to get more involved and serve your community? There are several town committees with vacancies! See our town website committees page for committee descriptions and vacancies, and submit a Town Committee Membership Application if you are interested!
Town Photo Bank: Taken any nice shots of Westport Island scenes or events lately? We'd love to add them to our photo bank! We are always looking for pictures for our website, town reports, and other publications. Maybe a town calendar someday? Email them to townclerk@westportisland.gov

Holiday Sing-Along at the Community Church, to be announced. The WCA is working on bringing back the holiday chorus performance and sing-along. It's not totally firmed up at this point, so keep an eye on our website calendar for confirmation.
Town Office Holiday Party, Thursday, Dec. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m., Town Office, 6 Fowles Point Road. Join the staff and Selectboard in the Town Office Community Room for a holiday celebration! Heating Assistance Available: Midcoast Maine Community Action is now accepting applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the 2024-2025 heating season. If you might need help heating your home this winter, give them a call at 207-442-7963, or visit midcoastmainecommunityaction.org. There is also firewood available through the efforts of the Westport Island Woodchucks wood bank. Email Donna Curry at donnac@gwi.net if you or someone you know needs help with firewood this winter.
Bridge work this ... winter? Seems like this has been in the newsletter forever! First it was summer, then fall, now, who knows? The best I can say, is that the DOT will be re-paving the Westport bridge at some point. You can check out the plan here.
