Fatal head-on crash in Bristol
On Dec. 21 at 3:44 p.m., Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a head-on motor vehicle collision on Bristol Road in Bristol at the intersection with Walpole Meeting House Road. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Bristol Fire Department, and CLC Ambulance were dispatched to the crash.
The preliminary investigation showed that a blue 2012 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Timothy M. Tibbetts, 65, of Southport was northbound on Bristol Road. Tibbetts failed to yield to a vehicle turning onto Walpole Meeting House Road. The Tibbetts vehicle passed this vehicle and entered the southbound lane. While in the southbound lane, the Tibbetts vehicle encountered a silver 2007 Volvo station wagon traveling south. This vehicle was operated by Allen H. Millett, 70, from Damariscotta. The Tibbetts vehicle struck the Millett vehicle head-on. Millett died as a result of the collision. Tibbetts was transported to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both Tibbetts and Millett were the sole occupants of their vehicles and Tibbetts was wearing a seatbelt. Millett was not seat belted. The cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner's Office.
The collision is being reconstructed by sheriff's deputies and investigators from Brunswick Police Department. Bristol Fire assisted at the scene. The road was not shut down to traffic during the investigation. The scene was cleared at 8:30 p.m. The preliminary investigation indicates speed and road conditions were factors in the crash.
