Newcastle author publishes first book
Katheryn Kiden has always been a storyteller, according to her mother, Julie Coffin of Boothbay. Sometimes her stories could have gotten her family into trouble.
“When she was 10, Katheryn's brothers had a tent in the yard, which was a hideaway for boys only,” Coffin said. “One night the Waldoboro Chief of Police showed up on my doorstep laughing hysterically — seems Katheryn had written a story in school about having to live in a tent with all her dolls because, since she had four brothers, there was no room in the house.
“Thank goodness the chief knew us and was laughing. I told him that she has her own room. He looked into the tent for a moment and saw the cap guns and GI Joes, laughed more and left.”
On January 5 of 2014, the Newcastle resident’s dream of being a storyteller will be fulfilled with the self-publication of her first book, “Where Words Fail.” The book is a work of fiction, the first in a series of novels called the “Save Me Series.”
This first book follows the story of character Abby Irons, an all-around successful woman who is the frontman for a band and a record executive. However, her life is not as perfect as it seems from the outside.
“Everything is tainted by a past that won't stop coming up, a present that is falling apart everywhere but onstage, and a future that she’s not so sure about,” Kiden said.
Attempting to hold life together while dealing with a multitude of issues, the lead guitarist in her band checks into rehab. The replacement, Jameson Williams, throws a massive curve ball into her life. As Kiden said, “Money, fame, love and life are all up in the air.”
Kiden just began seriously writing last year, after her brother passed away.
“It was a way to get out of my own head,” Kiden said. “It works.”
The other books in the series have all been partially written, mostly due to writer’s block.
“I'm trying to write one story and characters from the other books are yelling at me to write them first,” Kiden said. “There should be six or seven books in the series, and all the characters collide together in some way. Book two is about Abby's best friend and Jameson's brother.”
Kiden has never been one to shy away from adversity. Diagnosed with ADD, she had a very hard time in high school, according to her mother. Cramped classrooms and constant construction going on in and around the school were continual distractions. When the teachers told her mother she was “doomed to fail,” Kiden took matters into her own hands and graduated at age 15.
Coffin is very proud of her daughter.
“When she gets rich from this book, and the several others coming after it, she will be putting her dear mother in a good nursing home, in Hawaii, with a cabana boy,” Coffin said.
Kiden works a full-time job in addition to her writing. To order a copy of “Where Words Fail,” contact Katheryn Kiden on her Facebook author page. She is currently working on getting the book for sale on Amazon.com as well.
