Martha White draws large luncheon crowd
Martha White, granddaugher of E. B. White, was the guest speaker at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's Literary Luncheon on January 10.
After lunch, White read excerpts from the latest compilation of letters, poetry and essays by her grandfather, "E. B. White on Dogs." Some of these excerpts included two letters, one to the IRS and the other to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; the essay, "Dog Training" featuring his dashound, Fred; and "Daisy," the black Scottie dog routinely written about by White in his column, "Talk of the Town," in The New Yorker.
Daisy, struck and killed by a cab that ran up onto the curb, was forever immortalized in her obituary, printed in the magazine.
A round of question and answer followed the readings.
Barbara House, program director at the library said the January 10 group was the largest ever, with over 40 people in attendance. Among them was E. Davies Allan, president of Chesterfield Associates of Westport Island. Allan wrote to E. B. White when he was a 15-year-old student at Pomfret High School in Pomfret, Conn., in the 1950s.
Allan told the author, essayist and poet that he wanted to study the art of humorous essay writing. White encouraged him to pursue the writing. Allan also asked to visit White at his home in Maine. Wrote White: "As for a visit here in Maine, I must decline. Matter of temperament."
Martha White lives in Rockport with her husband, Taylor Allen, owner of Rockport Marine.
