‘Winter Colors’ new show at Gleason Fine Art
“Winter Colors: Paintings by Mitch Billis, Andrea Peters, Phil Barter, Tom Curry, Peter Sculthorpe, and Jessica Stammen” is the new show at Gleason Fine Art. The show opens Thursday, Feb. 6 and will run through Saturday, March 29.
To those who have never experienced Maine's longest season, “winter” is synonymous with the absence of color. However, for the artists who live here, winter is permeated with color. Without the omnipresence of green, subtler, more complex shades make themselves known.
With “Wotton's Wharf,” Billis uses delicate shades of blue, lavender, and mauve to create a scene of mythic beauty.
In “Cold and Clear,” Peters surrounds fluffy pillows of snow with great splashes of pink, yellow and aqua.
In “Mill Pond,” Barter revels in the graphic qualities of white snow contrasted with yellows, blues and browns.
Sculthorpe places a lemon-yellow late-day sunset dead center in his extravagantly gray “Bay of Shoals.”
In “Blizzard,” Tom Curry uses warm peaches and lavenders to allow the viewer to experience how peaceful a snowstorm can be.
All of these winter paintings are on view at Gleason Fine Art located at 31 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor. The gallery's winter hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
