Alwyn “Otto” Charles Purinton Jr., 89, died peacefully on February 2, 2014 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

He was born on February 15, 1924 to Alwyn Charles Purinton Sr. and Louise Scott in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Otto was raised in East Liverpool and graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1940. From there he attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and was in the Navy ROTC. Graduating college early, he served two years in the South Pacific on the U.S. Navy Destroyer USS Patterson in the Pacific Theater during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant.

In 1946, he married his beautiful wife Marguerite “Peg” Stewart and they lived in Philadelphia to begin their life together while Otto began work on an MBA. This era was shortened by the call to return to the family in East Liverpool where they lived until their retirement. Having spent summers with Peg’s family in Newagen, Southport Island, they built a house there in 1980 and spent their retirement years between Newagen and East Liverpool. When living in two places became difficult, they moved permanently to Maine at St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.

Otto spent his working career in the “family business,” and was the president of Potters Savings & Loan, from 1967-1989. As such he held various positions with the U.S. League of Savings Institutions and was president of the Ohio League of Savings Institutions.

In addition to being a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, East Liverpool and St. Columba Episcopal Church, Boothbay Harbor, Otto was a member of the Rotary International. Through this association, Peg and Otto hosted a foreign exchange student and formed a lifelong bond with their honorary daughter Yuko Takebayashi of Kagoshima City, Japan.

Other interests included vegetable gardening and traveling. Peg and Otto traveled the world, visiting South America, Russia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, as well as enjoying several ship cruises.

Otto was predeceased by his loving wife, Marguerite “Peg” (Stewart) Purinton and two sisters, Virginia Smith and Theodosia Mahan.

He is survived by three sons, Gregg Stewart Purinton and his wife Tammy of Pittsburgh, Pa., Alwyn Charles “Scott” Purinton III and his wife Della Graham of New Orleans, La., and Arthur Terhune “Terry” Purinton and his wife Marion Lipschutz of Purchase, N.Y. There are three grandchildren, Anna G. Purinton and her husband David Hauver of Washington D.C., Benjamin Purinton of Purchase, N.Y., and Sara Purinton of Purchase, N.Y.

The family thanks the wonderful caregivers of St. Andrews Village and Miles Hospice for their love and support of Otto throughout his decade there.

A memorial service will be held in the spring in East Liverpool, Ohio.
