Sylvester added to department
There's a new officer in town.
Officer John Kyle Sylvester was introduced to the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen February 10.
Damariscotta Police Chief Ron Young said Sylvester hails from the Camden/Rockland area and has already fit in with the Damariscotta squad.
“He's a good addition for us,” Young said. “He's a go-getter and he's already made an impact. He's a good fit for the town.”
Young said Sylvester is slated to attend police academy in January, 2015.
Speed enforcement working
Young said that the board's wish for more speed enforcement has been granted.
In previous meetings the board of selectmen had requested additional speed details in places where motorists typically speed.
“I think we've made an impact,” Young said.
At a previous board of selectmen meeting, a request was made to further enforce the town's speeding laws. Young said having the cars visible was enough of a deterrent.
While more tickets have been written since speed enforcement was ramped-up, that was not the initial goal, Young said.
“We've given out a lot of warnings; if we pull someone over for a headlight, usually you get them for something other than a headlight,” he said. “I don't know if I've ever written a ticket for a headlight, but we'll go back and look at (the driver's history). We'll see if they've had warnings for something similar.”
