R.W. Horne publishes new book
R.W. Horne, who dubs himself “The Puckerbrush Poet of Boothbay Harbor, Maine,” has published a new book, “I’m the Luckiest Guy,” memoirs and tales — the luckiest stories from the luckiest guy in the world.
The 17 short stories range from “Claire de Lune,” a musical tale, to “Teaching a Lobster to Pray,” written in response to a Christian Science Monitor article by Colin Woodard revealing that lobsters can easily escape from traps. The final three stories are Christmas-related. Interwoven throughout is book are names and places many longtime local residents will recognize.
Horne, who says in his introduction that he is deaf because standard hearing aids won’t work and the complicated surgery necessary to restore his hearing is, “Not for me,” says that despite his handicap at 86-plus years of age, he considers himself a lucky person who can still play tennis, bike and swim and enjoy his mostly silent world.
On the back cover of his book, Horne, a longtime Squirrel Island summer resident, challenges Mainers to wake up and smell the salty air and be green, frugal and simple.
