Brunswick artist's textile artwork exhibit at Miles
Catherine Worthington's “Textile Art” exhibit at Miles Memorial Hospital in the Main Hallway Gallery opens on Saturday, May 3, and will run through June 13.
Worthington has a BFA in textile design from the University of MA, Dartmouth. Catherine spends time working in her home studio designing and creating textiles. Her art quilts are part of many private and some public collections and have been exhibited throughout Maine, New England, and Florida.
Worthington uses textile painting and surface design techniques to create colorful art quilts with themes of landscapes, seascapes and florals. Her work presents images of the natural environment from the gardens to the sea. Color, texture, pattern and design are constant sources of inspiration. Her textile works are constructed by layering surfaces and techniques.
Painting, printing and hand stitching accentuate detail and increase texture and depth. Pieces are often finished with French knots, beads, hand or machine stitching, and other embroidery techniques.
“I like to create a rich surface which will draw the viewer in and hold their attention as they look further into the work creating a feeling or familiar place to escape,” Worthington said.
The textile artist lives in Brunswick with her husband and three sons. Worthington works part-time as an artist mentor at Spindleworks in Brunwick, an art center for adults with disabilities. Catherine is a member of Maine Fiberarts, Five Rivers Arts Alliance, Maine Crafts Association and Designing Women.
She is active in coordinating and participating in art events in the Brunswick area and teaches surface design and textile painting workshops.
